Óscar Afonso, Full Professor at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (FEP), will take office, next March 21st, as FEP’s new Dean.

Elected by the School’s Council of Representatives, Óscar Afonso comes to the leadership of the school where he has completed his entire academic career, to which he has been linked for more than three decades and where he teaches in the three study cycles – Bachelors, Masters and PhDs.

He is the author of books, more than 130 articles in international scientific journals and numerous working papers, carrying out, in addition to his academic career, different consulting work as a member of the technical team and as coordinator.

Óscar Afonso, who succeeds José Varejão as Dean of the School, has as a major priority for his mandate to strengthen FEP as one of the great Economics and Management schools in Portugal.

“My greatest expectation as FEP’s Dean is that everyone can identify with the priorities, goals and measures, so that we all row in the same direction towards excellence. The ambition is to achieve a FEP collaborative with the rest of the University of Porto and with an ambitious and innovative attitude capable of permanently responding to social, economic, environmental and technological challenges”, highlights Óscar Afonso.

The action plan proposed for the next four years is structured around three strategic objectives – teaching, research and impact on society – and ten strategic axes, which include the internationalization of the school, social responsibility, sustainable development and digital transformation, among others.

Óscar Afonso will lead a School with 181 professors, 58 technical and administrative staff, and almost 3,200 students enrolled in Bachelors, Masters and Phds.
