Researcher andMember of the Centre for Research in Education and Intervention (CIEE) Sofia Almeida Santos was selected to join the Working Group responsible for creating the European Education for Citizenship Area.
This is an initiative led by the Council of Europe in collaboration with members of the Education Steering Committee (CDEDU).
Santos will join a group whose mission is developing a new Framework Convention, whose presentation and signature by the Ministers of Education of all Member States is scheduled for 2026. This document will have an impact on the European educational panorama, covering institutions educational activities throughout the old continent.
In line with the European Commission’s 2030 Targets, the objective of this convention is to establish a Framework that promotes quality citizenship education in Europe, strengthening democratic principles and cooperation between Member States.
By leading this project, the Council of Europe reaffirms its commitment to building a democratic culture and creating an inclusive European space dedicated to citizenship education.
Santos will work alongside renowned international experts such as Gert Biesta, Edda Sant Obiols, Nino Revishvili and Salvador Sala. Together, they will define the key concepts and mapping of educational policies that will guide this transformative initiative. Her selection through a highly competitive competition reinforces Portugal’s relevance in projects with international impact.
