Founded by a PhD in Computer Science alumnus, NILG.AI was chosen by Microsoft to be part of the American company’s ‘Learn with Creators’ global education programme.
This Microsoft initiative connects ten international online content creators, including NILG.AI‘s CEO Kelwin Fernandes, to a community that aims to expand access to education in Artificial Intelligence, with the aim of sharing knowledge on the subject on a global scale.
Kelwin Fernandes’ startup is dedicated to helping companies improve their decision-making processes and efficiency through Artificial Intelligence, with dedicated online resources that are shared through a podcast, a blog, courses and a YouTube channel.
Founded in 2018, NILG.AI has had a very solid rise, based on a strong presence on social media, which led it to be chosen for this programme by the US company. The YouTube channel was created in 2023 and has more than 100,000 subscribers, where Kelwin Fernandes‘ practical and strategic approach focuses on teaching companies how to adopt Artificial Intelligence in a more efficient and adaptive way.
Incubated at the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto (UPTEC), the FEUP alumnus’ company was also recently awarded Data Changemaker of the Year at DSPA Insights 2024 (pictured), thanks to an Artificial Intelligence project designed to optimise the collection and management of urban waste in the Algarve.
18 years of a Doctoral Programme of excellence
The Doctoral Programme in Computer Science was proposed in 2007, bringing together the Universities of Minho and Aveiro and the Faculties of Engineering and Sciences of the University of Porto (MAPi). MAPi is a bid by these three universities to create a high quality 3rd cycle training programme in Computer Science in the north of the country, with an imminently international character, strongly based on quality research.
MAPi aims to train professionals who will be future leaders in Computer Science, especially with good scientific training, good communicators and entrepreneurial initiative, and who will be able to pursue a professional career as researchers, as university professors or as agents of change in companies with a strong commitment to innovation.
MAPi has developed international partnerships, namely with Carnegie Mellon University, within the scope of the CMU-Portugal programme, conferring a double degree in Computer Science, and the partnership with the University of Texas at Austin, which, together with other one-off partnerships, give the programme an international dimension and visibility. Under these partnerships, dozens of students have already been co-supervised by Portuguese and American professors.
