In what is the best performance ever by the University of Porto (U.Porto) in the prestigious annual Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking, which classifies institutions according to their academic reputation, reputation among employers and scientific output, it is Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) that stands out the most.

Civil Engineering thus returns to a prominent position, after a year’s hiatus, and is joined by Architecture and Pharmaceutical Sciences in the three areas of study that feature in the world’s ‘top 100’ of the renowned ranking.

For the Director of FEUP’s Department of Civil Engineering and Geo-Resources (DECG), Francisco Taveira Pinto, this is further proof of the importance of Civil Engineering in the development of the country and society. ‘This classification fills the entire community of our Department with satisfaction and pride. On my own behalf, I would like to thank them for all their effort and dedication to teaching, research and the transfer of knowledge. It is the corollary of several years of publicising what Civil Engineering really is, its many areas of intervention, its importance to society, the country and its development. Without Civil Engineering, no country can truly develop.’

At a national level, the Civil Engineering studied at the University of Porto also stands out when compared to other national higher education institutions in the area.

At a broader level, the areas of Materials Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering are in the top 200.

It should be noted that in the area of Engineering and Technology, the University rose 28 places to 177th in the world.
