Professor Fernanda Otília Figueiredo, a lecturer at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (FEP), has recently been appointed as the representative of the Portuguese Statistical Society (SPE) on the Scientific Council of the Institute for Educational Assessment (IAVE). The appointment was officially confirmed by the Secretary of State for Education, recognising her outstanding contribution to the field of statistics and education in Portugal.
Fernanda Figueiredo is a leading figure in the field of statistics, with an academic and professional career marked by extensive training and dedication to scientific research. She completed her PhD in Statistics and Operational Research (Probability and Statistics) in 2003 at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. Prior to that, she obtained a Master’s degree in Probability and Statistics in 1995, also from the University of Lisbon, and a degree in Mathematics in 1984 from the University of Porto.
Currently, she is an Associate Professor at FEP, a position she has held since 2020, and has been a member of the research centre CEAUL (Centre for Statistics and Applications, University of Lisbon) since 2003. In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Professor Figueiredo is the author of scientific books and has published several articles in scientific journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. Her experience also includes participation in numerous scientific projects, as well as leading consultancy projects focused on knowledge transfer.
The Portuguese Statistical Society (SPE), founded in 1980, aims to promote and develop the study of statistics and its applications, as well as to bring together statisticians and professionals from different fields across universities, the private sector, and public administration. The SPE regularly organises seminars and scientific outreach activities, as well as publishing a semi-annual Bulletin with news and articles of interest to the scientific community and the general public. In 1991, the society restructured and adopted its current name, experiencing a period of great dynamism, with a significant increase in membership.
Her multifaceted work in the fields of statistics and education, combined with her commitment to academic excellence, makes her an exceptionally qualified and valuable choice for the position of representative of the SPE at IAVE, a role that will undoubtedly contribute to the development of educational assessment in Portugal.
