João Gama, Retired Full Professor at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (FEP), has been honoured as an Emeritus Professor of the University of Porto in a ceremony that took place on 24 March 2025. With a career spanning over 30 years, he excelled in teaching Informatics and Data Science, having also served as the director of the Master’s in Data Analysis for 12 years.

Beyond teaching, João Gama is a leading figure in Artificial Intelligence research. He is a researcher and board member of the Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Laboratory (LIAAD) at INESC TEC. His international recognition is remarkable, being a EurAI Fellow, IEEE Fellow, and Asia-Pacific AI Association Fellow, as well as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Data Science and Analytics. His constant presence in global rankings of the most cited scientists further reinforces the impact of his work in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Eight other professors honoured

In addition to João Gama, U.Porto also awarded the title of Emeritus Professor to eight other academics: Arminda Alves, Dulce Madeira, Fátima Carneiro, John Greenfield, José Oliveira, Natércia Teixeira, Rui Póvoas, and Zulmira Santos. These professors, recognised figures in their respective fields of teaching and research, collectively have over 300 years of service to the institution.

Since the establishment of this distinction in 2004, the university has granted the title of Emeritus Professor to 97 academics.

With this tribute, U.Porto reaffirms its commitment to recognising and valuing the outstanding careers of its lecturers and researchers, highlighting their invaluable contributions to the advancement of knowledge and society.
