The School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (FEP) made its mark at the 10th Workshop of the European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS), an event designed to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences among students, alumni, faculty, and professionals in the field of statistics. FEP’s participation stood out through the contributions of its students and alumni, as well as the active involvement of its academic staff.
Catarina Campos Silva, an alumna of the Master in Data Analytics, EMOS track, was one of the event’s highlights. Catarina, who completed an internship at STATEC Luxembourg, continues to inspire with her professional journey. Ricardo Carvalho, a second-year student in the MADSAD (EMOS track), also stood out as he prepares to undertake his internship at the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics (INE). Both were invited by the event’s organisers, who commended the talent and contributions of FEP students to the field of statistics.
FEP’s representation at the workshop also included Professor Maria Eduarda Silva, who serves as FEP’s academic representative in EMOS, and Professor Pedro Campos, the INE’s representative in EMOS and a guest speaker at the event. Their involvement underscores FEP’s strong ties to the international statistics community and the vital role of collaboration between academia and statistical organisations.
It is worth noting that students of the Master in Data Analytics have the opportunity, under certain conditions, to obtain the EMOS (European Master in Official Statistics) qualification. Created in 2014 by Eurostat and the European Statistical System (ESS), EMOS aims to integrate the topic of official statistics into academic curricula, addressing gaps in training and recruitment within the field. The programme also seeks to establish a pool of highly qualified professionals for the ESS and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).
This event highlights the importance of fostering collaboration between academia and statistical organisations, driving significant advancements in the field of statistics and underscoring the positive impact of FEP students and the School on the international stage.
