The School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (FEP) has taken a significant step in its environmental strategy by obtaining Scope 3 certification, further strengthening its commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact.

Scope 3 is one of the most challenging certification categories, as it encompasses indirect greenhouse gas emissions across an organisation’s entire value chain. This includes, for example, the daily commuting of students and staff, the consumption of goods and services, and waste management.

With this certification, FEP takes an important step in strengthening its environmental strategy and is now preparing to advance with the creation of its Carbon Neutrality Roadmap. This strategic plan will outline the necessary actions to mitigate carbon emissions, aligning the institution with global decarbonisation goals, such as those set out in the Paris Agreement.

“Scope 3 certification is an important milestone in our mission to make FEP a benchmark in sustainable education. This commitment goes beyond our campus, encompassing all our operations and practices, both internal and external,” highlights FEP’s Dean Óscar Afonso.

It is worth noting that entities such as the Financial Times have highlighted the importance of this certification, considering it a crucial indicator of transparency and environmental responsibility in institutions.

“By adopting a strategic and comprehensive approach, FEP positions itself at the forefront of sustainability, serving as an example for other universities and organisations seeking a transition to a more sustainable future. With the Carbon Neutrality Roadmap, we aim to lead with concrete actions that inspire real and lasting change, not only within our community but also in other institutions,” concludes Óscar Afonso.
