The School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto (FEP) was once again a centre for reflection and debate on the key economic issues shaping the country, with a focus on the proposed State Budget for 2025. FEP hosted a series of events dedicated to the topic, providing the academic community, experts, and the general public with a platform to discuss the challenges and implications of the budget for Portugal’s economic future.
On 7 November 2024, FEP hosted the Annual Conference of the Order of Economists, which was attended by experts and prominent figures from the national economic and political landscape. The event, held in Auditorium 118 at FEP, started at 2:30 p.m. and ran until 6:00 p.m. Notable contributions came from António Mendonça, President of the Order of Economists, Jorge Dias, President of the Northern Regional Delegation of the Order of Economists, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, Minister of State and Finance, and Mário Centeno, Governor of the Bank of Portugal. FEP’s Director, Óscar Afonso, participated in the debate panel titled “OE2025, what kind of budget?”, alongside Luís Miguel Ribeiro, President of AEP, José Alberto Pinheiro Pinto, economist and tax expert, and the moderator Carlos Brito, a member of the General Council of the Order of Economists and former FEP lecturer.
On 20 November, the debate on the State Budget continued with an event held in the FEP’s Grand Hall, starting at 4:30 p.m. This event featured Ana Gomes, diplomat and former Member of the European Parliament, João Duque, economist and full professor at the Higher Institute of Economics and Management (ISEG), and Mário Amorim Lopes, Member of the Portuguese Parliament. The session was part of the State Budget Week, organised by the FEP Economics Society, and was open to the entire academic community and the general public. The initiative allowed for an in-depth analysis of the budget’s measures and their implications for various sectors of society.
On 25 November, FEP also hosted an in-person seminar dedicated to the 2025 State Budget, as part of the faculty’s seminar programme. The seminar featured Ana Luísa Costa, Tax Partner at PwC Portugal and expert in national and international taxation. Ana Luísa Costa shared her extensive experience in tax matters, including corporate reorganisations and tax disputes, and provided a detailed analysis of the fiscal implications of the Budget for businesses and citizens. The session highlighted the relevance of the fiscal debate, particularly in the context of a budget that is expected to be challenging for the country.
These events, organised by FEP, reinforce the School’s role as a centre of excellence for economic debate in Portugal, providing a space for deepening fiscal and budgetary issues and for the exchange of ideas among academics, experts, and the general public.
