The book ‘FEP / Viana de Lima’, written by João Carmo Simões and edited by Daniela Sá, has just been honoured with the prestigious DAM Architectural Book Award 2024, awarded by the Deutsche Architekturmuseum (DAM) and the Frankfurt Book Fair. The book explores in detail FEP’s main building, designed by the architect Alfredo Viana de Lima.
The DAM Prize jury emphasised the work’s design, concept and innovation, as well as its timelessness and material quality. As well as being a tribute to Viana de Lima’s architectural work, the book offers a sensitive and meticulous look at a building that has influenced generations of Portuguese architects. Completed in the 1960s, FEP’s main building is considered a landmark in the history of national architecture and has been classified as a monument of public interest.
João Carmo Simões, the author of the photographic essay that forms the basis of the book, is an architect recognised on the national and international scene. He was awarded the Secil National Universities Prize in 2010 and, more recently, was nominated for the EUmies 2024 Prize, reinforcing his relevance in contemporary architecture.
The award ceremony took place on 16 October at DAM Ostend in Frankfurt and was attended by the Portuguese Minister of Culture, Dalila Rodrigues.
The book ‘FEP / Viana de Lima’, already available in bookshops, is a unique opportunity to delve into the history of one of the most significant buildings in modern Portuguese architecture, whose formal and aesthetic qualities continue to impress.
