investigação FEUPThe University of Porto rose to seventh place of the best Ibero-American (Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Peninsula) Universities list, according to the SCImago Ibero-American Institutions Ranking 2015.

Published by the SCImago Group, using the Scopus database as source, this ranking is the result of a comparative analysis of the universities scientific activity between 2009 and 2013, according to bibliometric indicators such as the number of publications, the impact factor quality, specialization index, scientific leadership and excellence of publications.

The University of Porto raised three spots from last year ranking and was the only one in the top 10 list that moved up in the classification. To this performance contributed the 17,783 scientific articles published by the University between 2009 and 2013 – 2,000 more than the previous studied period (2008-2012).

Besides the amount of publications, the University also registers a 1.16 in the impact factor (citations per publication), meaning its articles are cited about 16% above the world average.

The SCImago Ibero-American Institutions Ranking 2015 is led by the University of São Paulo (Brazil), followed by the University of Lisbon (Portugal) and the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (Mexico). The other Portuguese universities ranked in the “top 50” are the University of Coimbra (25th), the University of Aveiro (27th), the New University of Lisbon (31st), and the University of Minho (33rd).
